Frequently Asked Questions About The Children's Internet®What is The Children's Internet® (TCI)?
The Children's Internet® is a unique tool for parents that empowers them to set their kids free on the Internet for an authentic, completely LIVE Web experience without the risk of danger. The membership-based service is designed for children 3-14 years old. TCI and a team of educators screen, approve and index every Web page and then use proprietary SafeZone Technology R to "lock" the pages into the system, so parents can be confident their children are safe from harmful, dangerous or offensive Internet content.
How is The Children's Internet® different than filtering services?
Filters are not as discerning as we'd like to believe. Consumer Reports in a recent study found that filters failed 1 out of 5 times. Many times they allow inappropriate material in while at the same time screening out useful sites. The Children's Internet offers unrestricted access to hundreds of thousands of actual Web pages that have been personally screened by our staff of "content watchdogs." Our watchdogs ensure the material your kids see is not harmful or offensive and that it meets our high standards for safety, learning and entertainment.
How is The Children's Internet® different than children's search engines and portals?
The Children's Internet offers the kid-friendly experience of a portal with the benefit of guaranteed safety. All of the live Internet sites and content in The Children's Internet are "locked" into the system, so kids see the world through a special lens that magnifies entertaining and educational content and shields them from harmful or offensive material. In contrast, children's search engines and portals offer much more limited security that can be bypassed by logging into a different search engine or URL. In The Children's Internet, only authorized adult users can access the entire Internet with just a password.
Is it possible for children to get out of The Children's Internet® system?
No. The only way to exit the system and access unapproved material on the Internet is with an authorized password. Parents can use the password to surf beyond The Children's Internet and are able to customize their Children's Internet experiences by adding individual sites not already added by the "content watchdogs". We also encourage our users to send us Internet sites and Web pages they think would be interesting for our members. Our "watchdogs" review the sites and add the best material to the appropriate age groups within The Children's Internet.
What is the target age for The Children's Internet®?
The Children's Internet® is designed for children 3 - 14 years old. Content is organized into four different age groups: 3-5, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14 so that we can "grow" with your children.
Where does The Children's Internet® content come from?
The Children's Internet® is made up of the best sites from the Web and a rich collection of original content, sound and animation created by TCI's award-winning designers.
How do you determine the content for each of the four age groups?
The Children's Internet® was developed specifically to include all of the things kids love - freedom to explore and learn along with sound, animation, games, prizes and an element of surprise. The Children's Internet employs a team of content watchdogs made up of teachers, educators and other qualified reviewers who personally screen each Internet site accessible through The Children's Internet. These content advisors ensure each site is safe and wholesome and then index it according to learning and entertainment value for each appropriate age group in keeping with curriculum guidelines set by Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory.
Can I customize The Children's Internet® to meet the needs of each of my children?
With our Family Favorites feature, parents may easily customize The Children's Internet for each of their children's interests and needs. They can add live Web sites and pages from outside the service, such as individual school Web sites, a parent's place of work or any other pages from outside the product. They can also help their children choose the visual themes and animations they like best and want to return to frequently.
What if one of the pages in The Children's Internet® is hyper-linked to an unapproved site?
It is impossible to link to any unapproved site! Every link must be within The Children's Internet in order for users to access it without a password. Links not approved by our content advisors will not be accessible to children. Web sites are approved page by page, so kids have access to more online information and the freedom to surf appropriate segments of larger Web sites - a benefit filtering software and children's search engines can't provide.
Is it possible to override the security?
The only way to disable the security is with a password. Authorized adult users with a password can disable the security and then search the Internet at large. For added safety, the service will automatically default to our security once the user has logged off the product or shut down their computer.
How does The Children's Internet® work with my ISP?
We have developed a technology that uses a CD-ROM to quickly download our rich sound, graphics and animation while simultaneously corresponding with the real time interactivity of hundreds of thousands of Internet sites. When you log on to your ISP, it serves as the connecting port to The Children's Internet. Through our SafeZone Technology®, users have unrestricted access to hundreds of thousands of pre-approved sites while restricting access to areas outside The Children's Internet. It also allows secure e-mail to and from contacts in your personal E-Budds address book.
What are the minimum system requirements?
You need to have: Internet access with an Internet Service Provider; Internet Explorer 5.0 or above; PC with a Pentium 133 processor or higher; Windows 95 or higher; 4x or faster CD-ROM Drive; Sound card; VGA Color Monitor 800x600 with 8 bit colors minimum; a 28.8k modem or higher.
Do I need the CD-ROM to operate The Children's Internet®?
You ONLY need the CD-Rom ONCE to install the service, but once it's installed you can operate The Children's Internet from your hard drive. In addition to our proprietary SafeZone Technology®, The CD-Rom contains a variety of rich graphics, so the animation and sounds that make The Children's Internet so exciting for kids always download quickly. It also keeps The Children's Internet fresh and energized, so kids don't "outgrow" or abandon it after a week or two.
Will this work with my Apple computer?
We will be launching a Mac-compatible version in the future.
Can I use The Children's Internet over my cable Internet or broadband connection?
Yes.
Can I download The Children's Internet® from the Web?
Yes, you can download The Children's Internet® from the web when you go to the "ORDER NOW" section of our website. Once you click "DOWNLOAD NOW" you will be taken to the download page. First print out the instructions and read them carefully before downloading. The process will take a minimum of 18 minutes on a DSL/Broadband connection and a minimum of 55 minutes on a dial-up connection. If you do have a dial-up connection and the download is taking too long on your system, please request a CD-Rom. Because of the size and richness of our graphics, sound and animation, the CD-Rom is the fastest delivery system. You can request a CD-Rom by going to the "ORDER NOW" section and clicking "REQUEST A CD".
How many people can use The Children's Internet® service per household?
Each household subscription facilitates one Personal Computer and is good for an UNLIMITED number of children. Each household user creates his or her own user name, profile and password to access The Children's Internet. As with any Internet service, however, only one person can access The Children's Internet at a time. Every computer needs a separate subscription; hence if there are two computers in the household then there must be two separate subscriptions for that household.
How much does it cost?
The Children's Internet is available as a stand-alone safety product that works with your current Internet Service Provider at a cost of only $9.95 per month.
How did you come up with the dogs?
Bango and Baxter are companion dogs to guide and protect your children on the Internet. Bango is a Net-wise protector dog to help keep children safe from harmful or offensive content. Baxter is a smart and loyal companion to guide them to sites rich with exciting educational and entertainment resources.
Content Policy and StandardsThe Children's Internet® was developed specifically as a safe and dynamic way to access the best of the Internet. It was also designed as a learning tool for children, families and teachers -- from the architecture of our search engine, to the look and feel of our interface, to the content delivery, and to the training and focus of our content staff. To ensure that our content meets the highest educational and entertainment standards, The Children's Internet has assembled a team of teachers, educators and other qualified reviewers, who personally screen the hundreds of thousands of Internet sites and pages accessible through The Children's Internet. These content watchdogs first ensure the site is safe and wholesome. Then it is screened for learning and entertainment value and indexed according to its age-appropriateness. We follow curriculum guidelines set by Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory. McREL is one of 10 regional educational laboratories (REL's) sponsored by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) of the U.S. Department of Education and has received international recognition for its comprehensive compendium on the identification and articulation of content standards and benchmarks. The Children's Internet grows constantly to reflect the best sites and pages on the World Wide Web. We welcome suggestions for new content, and strive to update The Children's Internet to reflect the best and most innovative content available. |
